President’s Message

Edwina Lee, 2020 President

  Happy Easter Everyone!

Since my installation on December 7, 2019, almost one quarter of the year has gone by. We had a very successful January general membership meeting with about 75 members and three new prospective members attending. We were honored by four of new members who joined in 2019, with a fun and exciting dance performance and also their interesting research on the Chinese zodiac.

I was privileged as President to attend the United Chinese Society annual tea ceremony where we met all the new Presidents of other organizations in the Chinese community on Sunday, January 5th. I also attended the Narcissus pageant on Saturday, January 11th, as I was invited by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce President-Elect, Elvira Lo, who is a Past-President of ACUW.

The Elected Directors and the Board and all the Committee Chairs are hard at work planning for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, this year we did not do the Night in Chinatown Chinese New Year Parade as the sponsors for this event could not get the cooperation of the City and County of Honolulu and they could not get the funding either. We had a big cultural project at Kahala Mall to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It was well attended by the community and our members had a lot of fun.

My goal of recruiting 10 new members this year has been met part way as we have welcomed two new members, Diane Okubo and Rosemarie Woodruff, in this first quarter. I am hoping we can recruit more the next quarter. Our membership directory will be printed this year and will be passed out at the June general membership meeting. If you have not ordered your ACUW t-shirts, please do so by contacting Elvina Yamashiro. She will have the sample t-shirts available at the March general membership meeting for the members to try on.

Our Scholarship committee is hard at work and has uploaded the application and information onto the ACUW website. Our Legislative Review committee has started to work on the Policies and Procedures and we are thankful that we have recruited some very valuable members and past-presidents on this committee to help us with this task. It will be a long and tedious project, but we are hoping to complete it by the end of this year.

The Interest committee is hard at work planning all the interest projects for the rest of the year. Our first one will be on March 28th where we will visit a goat cheese farm in Waialua. This should be an interesting excursion and it is a long drive so we are recommending to carpool.

We have already presented a draft budget at our January general membership meeting and we will present the final budget at the March general membership meeting. In this issue, you can review the final budget and hopefully it will be passed by our general membership on March 7th with minimum discussion.

I am still looking for a President-Elect, however, we are already planning for the 2020 Christmas Installation. Wendie Liu has volunteered to chair this event, so if she calls on you to help, please offer your assistance to her.

If you or anyone knows of anyone who wants to join our organization, please let me know and I will direct them to our Membership Chair, Darlene Nakayama and we can start the process. Thank you again for believing in me and my new Board of Directors and I will do my best for this organization to the best of my abilities. Thank you.
