Congratulations to our 2012 and 2013 Executive Council.  I salute and applaud all of you for the endless time you have given to ACUW.

Thank you for your confidence and trust in electing me as your ACUW 2013 President for the ensuing term.  I am so excited that our theme for this year will be The Magic of China.  Just like our ten founders of this organization, back in 1931, we will carry on our “magical” mission “to further the cultural, social and intellectual welfare” of our members as we renew our alliance with other community organizations to perpetuate our Chinese traditions and cultural heritage.

Because of our family traditions, I remember making gow, folding gum gyun, and eating ham ngee sitting on a stool in Popo’s kitchen.  I remember receiving li see from uncles and aunties at Chinese New Year dinners.  My favorite dish was fried oysters and gin doi.  I remember jumping over fire to take away all fears and to be brave.

I am indebted to my ancestors for making my life in Hawaii, for showing me tradition, morals, respect, perseverance, determination, passion, and love of education.

I joined ACUW in 1988 and am humbled and deeply honored that you have all elected me to serve as your President for 2013.  What are my goals for the year?  All teachers think of the 3 R’s …well I  have 6 R’s for us to follow this year…. This year’s 6 R’s are:

1.      Revise policies and procedures to align with our new 501C3 tax status- Directors

2.      Recruit new members to perpetuate our organization for the future – Membership Committee

3.      Renew our visibility in the community – Communications Committee

4.      Nurture our Relationships with other community organizations –Community Service Committee/Fundraiser

5.      Recognize our cultural heritage - it is important that I have you learn something “Chinese” at each meeting – a word, a phrase, a tradition….

a song… a dance…. Cultural Committee

6.      Resolve all of our challenges and come together as an organization strengthen to contribute to make our world a better place.

The Christmas Installation luncheon, The Magic of Christmas,” was truly a success.  We wish to thank Chairperson Dorothy Mau and her committee for a job well done.  Congratulations to the 2012 President Susan Lee and her corps of officers as they worked very diligently.  The Christmas program featured the Yeung Dak Lion Dance Association, St. Louis School Concert Band, the Pacific Pearls LOSNA and the Honorable Judge Ronald Moon who installed the 2013 ACUW Executive Council.  On behalf of ACUW, I would like to congratulate my corps of officers, directors and chairs as we look forward to your leadership skills to make 2013 a better one for us all.

Our other special guests were State of Hawai‘i Speaker of the House of Representatives, Calvin Say,  Councilmember Stanley Chang of the City and County of Honolulu, Dr. Lawrence Tseu (Honorary Philanthropist), Blossom Tyau (Chinese Women’s Club), Yuk Guy Yee and Danny Young (United Chinese Society), Jennie Chen (Taipei Economic Cultural Office) and Leilani and Ed Keough.

Got a Birthday?  We will also celebrate those who have birthdays in January and February.  Thank you Blossom Mau for setting up luncheon venues for the year.

Chinese New Year is on February 10, 2013 and to kick it off is the annual Chinatown New Year Parade, which will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 3:30pm.  This is a festive adventure in our colorful Chinese costumes, hats, fans, and umbrellas. Thank you to Doris Lam’s committee. This is a celebration you won’t want to miss and we might be featured on TV.

If you have a cultural talent, experience, story, please let our Cultural Chair, Hong Jiang know.  She is getting ready for the upcoming Cultural Event at the Honolulu Academy of Arts for the Bank of Hawaii Family Day.  Also, this year we will learn something Chinese at each meeting.  Let’s have fun and share your wealth of knowledge and talents.

If you choose to RUN with the WINNERS, please join us in the Great Aloha Run on President’s Day, February 18, 2013.  More information will be provided to you from Shari Lee-Huntoon and Anna Chang.  This is an annual event my family participates in and we would love to share this healthy charitable experience with all of you.

The Annual ACUW Scholarship Fundraiser will be Chaired this year by Wendie Liu with Assistants Donna Wong and Blossom Mau.  Honorary Chairs to create the finesse, is none other than Dr. Lawrence Tseu and Blossom Tyau.  It will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.  For it to be a success, we ask that you volunteer of your time, talents and give generously to this fundraiser event.

ACUW is looking to sponsor a Model Mother and Model Father of the Year for the United Chinese Society.  Please see our Member Representative, Ruth Hirai.  She will also, be available for membership concerns.

What’s Cooking? Any writing skills? Some exciting publication ideas are on the horizon.

If you are “Techy” the Records Management team Chaired by Janel Haberman needs your help to archive our historical ACUW information.  It’s an “e” world!

So let’s all be flexible and try new ideas this year.  Let’s open our hearts and minds to do things differently and enjoy the excitement of adventure.  I hope you will embrace “Change”.  A wise man once said: “IF YOU ARE CHANGING YOU ARE GROWING!”  Let us grow together to build ACUW to the best organization in Hawaii.

Members please attend our meetings and special events,  sponsor new members, provide us information about other Chinese events in the community, help publicize our organization through the media to get name recognition, share your Chinese heritage with your family and friends, network with other organizations and community leaders and just have fun.

Together we will build a greater tomorrow for we are steadfast as an organization so rich in culture. You are all an inspiration to me. You are all individuals of “Greatness” and I empower you as my extended family …. as this is my 25th anniversary as a member of ACUW and ….You are all my silver lining.

May the Magic of China….the swirl of the snake…. entice you to challenge yourself to learn more and to share your Chinese heritage for the generations to come.

Good Health, Good Fortune, Happiness Always and a Brighter future for ACUW!

“Chin Doh Marn Jay!  (A thousand and a million thank you!)”

A Very Big Mahalo Nui Loa….. Xie Xie
