The 12th Annual Hawai‘i Qing Ming Celebration was held April 7, 2014 at the beautiful Mānoa Chinese Cemetery.  ACUW was acknowledged for its monetary donation to this celebration worshipping our ancestors.  This cultural event perpetuates our traditions and customs.  It is also educational and interesting for our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  ACUW members who attended were President Blossom Mau, Beverly Mau, Dorothy Mau, Betty Jong, Kathy Jay, and Chu Lan Schubert-Kwock.

Our dream to have a joint venture between ACUW’s Interest Committee and Community Service Committee to do something for the Pālolo Chinese Home residents became a reality on April 12, 2014.  Thank you Interest Committee Co-chairs Anna Chang and Shari Lee-Huntoon for making the goodies with the ladies and distributing them to PCH.  Shari coordinated getting 5 certified pet dogs for the residents to cuddle and hold.  Many happy and beaming faces were displayed by the residents as they held and cuddled the well-behaved and adorable dogs.  We want to thank all the volunteers who came to help that day.  They were Anna Chang, Shari-Lee Huntoon and her two dogs, and her friend Kaori with 3 dogs, Blossom MauBeverly Mau, Dorothy Mau, Lynette Yuen, Lola Fu, Valerie Wong, Sandi Shiroma, Pat Nakayama, Cora Haberman, Vivian Ho, and her mom.  We also celebrated the birthdays of six residents born in April.  They were given red and yellow yarn leis and we sang Happy Birthday to them in Chinese, Hawaiian, Cantonese, and Mandarin.  We ended our day at PCH by singing “If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands” and “You Are My Sunshine.”  A big mahalo to Rachel Augustin of PCH who helped us coordinate this beautiful and happy event.

On May 10, 2014, ACUW will participate in the Chevron Speech Festival for Elementary School children.  For many years, our members Thelma Nip and June Kawamoto have been coordinating this worthwhile project.  Members who signed up to be judges are Carol Chee and her son, Kathy Jay, Dorothy Mau, Beverly Mau, and Elizabeth Lum.

ACUW teamed with Kapiolani Community College Keyboard Ensemble to present an afternoon of music and springtime papercrafts for the residents of Palolo Chinese Home. ACUW also braved the winds and supported the Palolo Chinese Home Dynasty Golf Tournament by manning one of the premier golf holes. Another recent activity was supporting the Friends of the East-West Center by providing hostesses and two lei for Douglas Chong, who spoke about Chinese in Hawaii, and Michael Schuster, curator, for the exhibit on the Peranakan Chinese Heritage of Southeast Asia. "What we say does not matter. It's what we do that counts." Thank you generous members for your canned goods and monetary donations for our first Hawaii Food Bank collection at the last meeting. Remember to bring your canned goods or donations to the next meeting as we will be continuously collecting goods throughout the year.

Our visit with Palolo Chinese Home was kindly welcomed by the seniors as the Kapiolani Community College keyboard ensemble with seven students performed a medley of songs led by Associate Professor Anne Craig Lum. Immediately after, we mingled and chatted with the ladies as they created egg shaped wish cards hung on branches of bamboo for their table decorations. We had a fun time with our ACUW cheery members Shari Lee Huntoon with crowd pleaser Alouwishes, Anna Chang, Pat Hubbard, Marilyn Wong, Aileen Mirchandani, Wendie Liu, Laura Lum, Blossom Mau, Dorothy Mau, and Donna Wong. Thank you one and all for participating.

Palolo Chinese Home Dynasty Golf Tournament held on April 19 at Ala Wai Golf Course. For first two weeks of April, Wendie and Donna helped with picking up prizes all over town and on April 19, helped with working at Par 3 15th hole, assisting Blossom Tyau. Later at the banquet we helped with prizes. We did that as Community Service for ACUW.

It was a rewarding and touching experience to see members dance and roll with the Palolo Home residents on Saturday, September 8, 2012.  ACUW’s “Kitchen Rhythm Band” and mascot Alliwishes, visited the Lani Booth Wing at Palolo Chinese Home and entertained the residents with music and various kitchen instruments.  Quilted lap blankets sewn by Lola Fu were given to fifteen residents who pulled the winning card.  Lola, coordinator of this musical activity, arranged the music and the kitchen instruments for each resident.

President, Susan Lee and Committee Service Committee presented a donation check to Darry Ing, CEO and Frances Goo, Chair & President.

Thank you to Anna Chang, Lola Fu, Vivian Ho, Jerilyn Jeffryes, Shari Lee-Huntoon and Alliwishes, Susan Lee, Dorothy Mau, Pat Nakayama, and Maura Yee for participating in this community service activity.
