I am so grateful to all of you for your perseverance to make our Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Fashion Show/Silent Auction Luncheon Benefit, a success with well over 515 attendees. We were able to strategize and bring forth a memorable event that will be talked about in years to come. “Asian Rhythms and Motifs” was the bomb! Gee Yung’s Dragon danced to the rhythmic drums upstage to create excitement as everyone entered the ballroom after a morning of shopping in the bazaar located in the Palace Lounge. All strolled through the sales tables and silent auction…of Easter baskets, baked goods, cupcakes, floral arrangements with the Korean Dragon Fly kites floating to the rhythm of the cool gentle breezes sandwiched between ocean and mountains.

What an amazement as we journeyed into another world….Thank you for the flirty Asian ambiance at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel and utmost creativity to Chair, Wendie Liu and her Assistants, Donna Wong and Blossom Mau. Xie Xie to our own ACUW models for modeling with me and gracing our stage with the fashions from Dukes’ Clothing owned by Gail Nakasone: Dorothy Mau, Blossom Mau, Sylvia Ching, Betty Jong, and Fran Kramer.

To our Chairs Silent Auction: Doris Lam and Libby Lum, Bake Sales: Maura Yee, Tickets: Nora Chong and Sandi Shiroma, Finance: Cheryl Yeh and Pat Moberly, and Communications: Nancy Usui. Everyone who attended or donated has made this a huge success and we appreciate all that you have done.

We had ample TV coverage and publicity. Thanks to Nancy Usui, our Communications Chair. We ended up (3/16) at the Perry and Price show, were featured in Mid Week (3/13) with Gail Nakasone through Yu Shing Tang, went on KITV’s Community minute (3/21), were featured on the Honolulu Star Advertiser’s website through Nadine Kam featuring the Duke’s Clothing fashion show, Hawaii News Now –Morning show (3/27) with Grace Lee, and finally on the front page of the Advertiser on Saturday (4/13) with Dorothy Mau in her “Naturally Yours” top and myself with Douglas Ho and the Miss Chinatowns in John Berger community section (4/14) of the Sunday paper.

The finale of our fundraiser came down to the tables of ten: Beatrice Young Foundation (Douglas Ho), United Chinese Society, Hawaii Association of Realtors, Chinese Women’s Club, State Drapery (Millie and Peter Lui), Christine Ling, Guang Zhong Chinese Music Ensemble (Betty Jong, Harry Wong), American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), Daughters of the Nile, Ladies Oriental Shrine, Global Federation of Chinese Business Women, L & L Drive In, and Duke’s Clothing. I am proud of the outstanding leadership of our members and continuous participation of our family, friends and donors.

Our honored guests for our fundraiser included The Honorable Judge Ronald Moon and wife Stella; Ms. Minnie Ko, Director, Department of Economic Development, City and County of Honolulu; Mr. Danny Young, Vice-Chairman, United Chinese Society; Dr. Larry Dang, President United Chinese Society and wife, Liz; Mr. Leonard Kam, President, Chinese Chamber of Commerce and wife, Lori; Mrs. Diana Sum, 1st Vice President Hawaii Chinese Culture Service Center and Past President of the Global Federation of Chinese Business Women; Mrs. Fong Lam, Director, Association of Chinese from Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos; Mrs. Wendie Liu and Mrs. Jeanette Ching, President and 1st VP of Chinese Women’s Club; Mrs. Rena Ochse, President, Organization of Chinese American Women; Ms. Nadine Kam and John Berger of the Honolulu Star Advertiser; Gail Nakasone owner of Duke’s Clothing; Dr. Lawrence Tseu, Honorary Chair; and Mrs. Blossom Tyau, Special Liaison.

Our annual ACUW 2013 Scholarships and Special Family Scholarship Awardees will be introduced and at our next meeting.

Thank you to all of the committee members and those who have assisted Dorothy to coordinate all of the awards from ACUW this year, including Sybil Kyi (Special Scholarships). Please come to the June General Membership meeting to congratulate our awardees and thank our donors.  Congratulations to Christine Young on her election as Recording Secretary. We will have other officer elections at our General Membership Meeting as well. Any nominations for the 2013 offices of President-Elect and Vice-President are to be forwarded to our Board of Directors for approval at our meeting scheduled for May 11, 2013. Fifty of our ACUW members participated in the BOH Family Day cultural New Year event at the Honolulu Museum of Art, thanks to Chair Hong Jiang assisted by Lois Mui. All were recognized at our March meeting and thanked by the academy with a "One Day Free Pass"!

Thank you to our Community Service committee, Donna Wong and Wendie Liu, who visited with the Palolo Chinese Home in March and collected canned goods at our last meeting for our participation in the Food Bank.

Qing Ming traditional offerings of food, flowers, fireworks, military color guards, doves, poetry to honor and respect our ancestors at the Manoa cemetery were coordinated with the UCS through tri-chairs Henry Lee, Jeanette Young, and Harry Wong. The ceremony opened with the bugle and fireworks. Douglas Chong was the emcee and our own Betty Jong did the eulogy poem. Kathy Jay, Dorothy Mau, Theresa Chun, and myself held many memories as we passed out the incense to attendees for “Bai San”. Thank you members for folding the gum ngun at our last meeting. Many also toured the cemetery and “bone house” with interest committee, Anna Chang and Shari Lee- Huntoon. The bowling event and Pearl Harbor cruise is on the horizon.

An application from ACUW was submitted for the 2013 Model Mother of the Year by Member Representative, Ruth Hirai. Thank you for selecting our Nominee, Gretchen Jong. We wish her the very best to win this distinguished title.

The Family Luau is coming up in July. Get ready for family fun and “onolicious” Hawaiian food being coordinated by our Co-Chairs Sandi Shiroma and Ruth Hirai.

Recipes for the cookbook should be submitted by our next meeting to Co-Chairs Dorothy Mau and May Lee Chung. Look for those traditional recipes that became family favorites that you are willing to share and preserve for the generations to come. You all have the makings of royalty and a corporate business venture.

We will sing “Happy Birthday” (Zhu ni shengri kuaile) to those born in the months of June, July and August.

Make time to enjoy the natural beauty of living in Paradise…..Beach, hiking, tennis, golfing, fun runs, swimming, polo, soccer, etc. I will attend some spring concerts with my children, travel, and coordinate a few more charitable fundraising events (interested to join me?) Enjoy your sizzling hot summer! See you at our next meeting on June 1st.

“For Attractive lips, speak words of kindness.

For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair, let a child run their fingers through it once a day.

For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.

People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.

As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.”
